Top
quality Aberdeen Angus feeder and stocker calves have been raised
on the Steve Trigg Ranch since 1918 when the Triggs brought the
first herd of black cattle to New Mexico from Texas. This 50,000
acre ranch lies in the mesa country straddling the eastern edge
of San Miguel County, 32 miles NNW of Tucumcari, NM. It is operated
by Trigg Cattle Company. Kristen Holmes is the ranch manager with
her husband Richard.

“The
Last Family Ranch Left Standing”
Can a family
ranch survive more than two or three generations? It seems inevitable
that family disputes, death duties, or financial pressures eventually
chip away until the property must be sold, in pieces or altogether,
and the original ranch is just history.
The third generation descendants of Bess and Steve Trigg believe
that the Trigg Ranch will be “the last family ranch left standing”.
What makes us so sure? Read Linda’s account of “The
Trigg Experience” to find out.
Jim
Howell, certified educator and consultant for Allan Savory Holistic
Management,
visited the Trigg Ranch in August 2003 and wrote
an article that was published in
the Allan Savory Center's "In Practice" the following February.
Jim
writes, "It
was a pleasure to meet a ranching family with so many positive things
going for them. With people and financial issues well under control,
Rick and Kristen are well-poised to begin working on the ecological
side of things. With locally adapted cattle, the support of the
entire family, a healthy financial cushion, and a strong desire
to improve, the Trigg Ranch really is bursting with possibility."

Steve
L. Trigg Jr. passed away July 2nd, 2002.
Steve
Trigg operated the Trigg Ranch for over 60 years. He was a generous,
kind, and well respected New Mexico rancher and we miss him dearly.
A service was held on the Ranch on August 8th. Here
is his obituary - a good read - and photos of his memorial service
at the ranch.
Jeff
Lane, president of The Bell Ranch (http://thebellranch.com)
, died in an airplane crash on Wednesday, August 15, 2007.
The Trigg family is mourning the loss of a great friend and icon
of the community. Ryan Hartley of Roy, who was with Jeff ,also
died. Our deepest sympathy go out to the family and friends of
both Jeff and Ryan.
I met Jeff shortly after his father, Bill Lane, bought the Bell
Ranch in the early 70's. Jeff always saw the good in people and
had a way of bringing it out in them. I never heard Jeff utter
a bad word about anyone; through Jeff's stories and descriptions
of others you would't know there was a bad person alive. I think
he inherited that trait from his Dad.
The thing I liked most about Jeff was his unending enthusiasm
for just about everything. It didn't matter what it was: his family,
ranching, his hired help, water skiing, snow skiing, flying, music,
trail rides, the land, etc., Jeff was always 100% gung ho about
it. In 2006 when Christine and I went on the couples trail ride,
she was so impressed that even though Jeff had been on the same
trail so many times before, his enthusiasm for the whole event
was contagious; it was as though he was riding the trail for the
first time. His excitement made everyone around him feel good.
We loved listening and watching Jeff play the wash tub with Jr.
and all the "real" musicians. Jeff got pretty damn good
on that thing!

Jeff and Christine
Jeff loved kids and he loved to fly. My son Colton went along
with Jeff, my niece Kelly, and me, to Oshkosh Wisconsin in 2005
to one of the world's largest fly ins. During that week Jeff made
quite the impression on Colton who was 7 years old at the time.
After spending five days with him, Colton felt Jeff was his best
friend. It had been quite a few years since I had flown with Jeff
and I was quite impresed with the way he flew his turboprop.

Colton and Jeff at Oshkosh
Jeff Lane, we will certainly miss you. This world has lost a portion
of humanity with your passing! We love you. Good-by, Jeff!
